Highest Paying Jobs in America
Everyone wants to get paid for what they are worth; you want one of the highest paying jobs available. But the reality is that some jobs simply pay more than others as they often require more skills, trainings, or experience. So, in order to increase your maximum potential income, you need to learn the skills necessary to command a higher salary or overall income.
Below you will find a list of the highest paying jobs according to the US Government. If you are at the beginning stages of planning what career you want to get involved in, then this list can give a you a good idea of where the money is. However, you should also be aware that this list that the US government puts out each year is not the complete picture. You see, this list only includes the median salaries for standard employees (those working for someone else).
This list does not include self-employed individuals!
This is a huge omission if you want to get a more realistic picture of the incomes of people across the country. In fact, we will dig a little bit further and show that a huge portion of the wealthiest people in the world actually are entrepreneurs (self-employed). This is an important distinction rather than just saying that the only way to build wealth for yourself is to become an Anesthesiologist (for example).
So, having said that, now its on to list the Highest Paying Jobs according to the US Department of Labor. Again, this list below of jobs and salaries does NOT include self-employed individuals. In addition, these salaries are listed by Median salary (which means that half the people in these positions earn more and half earn below). This is not an average salary, as the average could be much higher or much lower in some of these circumstances.

So, if you want to make a lot of money, become a doctor, engineer, scientist, or computer programmer. At least this is what the highest percentage of people with the highest incomes are doing.
One interesting thing to note is those types of jobs that had no positions in the top 100. For example, those involved in manual labor did not make the top 100 list. Here are few other types of jobs that typically are not high level paying jobs: Security, Firefighters, Clerks, Actors, Sailors, Equipment Operators, Graphic Designers, Auto Mechanics, Police Officers, Photographers. This list could go on for a long way for the types of jobs that didn’t have a median income in the top 100, but this sample gives you a good idea.
What About Self-Employed Individuals?
As mentioned above, the list of high paying careers above does not include self-employed individuals. This leaves a significant part of the working population completely unaccounted for. According to some of the most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 14 million Americans are self-employed. Also according to the BLS, there are approximately 140 million total people that are employed in the United States. This means that 10% of all employed people are self-employed! One out of every ten workers in the US is working for themselves. That’s obviously a significant number.
So, yes, the above chart of the top paying jobs will give you a great idea of where the money is, but it is completely leaving out 10% of income earners. The reality is that many entrepreneurs do very well financially for themselves, so not having this data included really does leave the picture incomplete. However, its also important to note that lots of self-employed individuals do NOT do well and go out of business. So, its important to consider both sides of the equation.
The Richest People in The World
If you take a look at the annual report by Forbes on the richest people in the world, you will notice something interesting: the large majority of them all are entrepreneurs. Not a single person listed in the top 100 richest people lists are doctors or lawyers. Doesn’t that seem like a disconnect? After all, the highest paid jobs are all doctors, engineers, and lawyers, etc, right?
With an exception of a few, the richest people are those individuals that took large amounts of risk and started companies. The few on the richest list that are not entrepreneurs are typically individuals that inherited money from their family that were entrepreneurs. For example, several of the Waltons are worth billions because they inherited money from their father Sam Walton who was an entrepreneur (started Wal-mart).
Another consideration is that many of these richest individuals WERE engineers, computer programmers, scientists, or held other highly skilled positions before they ever became entrepreneurs.
What Will Be Your Journey to A High Paying Career?
So, as the data has shown, highly educated and highly skilled individuals such as doctors and engineers are the ones getting the highest paying jobs. So, if you want to follow in their foot steps, the path is fairly clear – you need to decide on a discipline, acquire the necessary education, and then put in the time learning the skills and experience required to land an excellent job.
However, as noted there are also many individuals (10% of the US working population) that choose to be self-employed. The statistics on the incomes of self-employed individuals is something that we will dig into deeper in another article. But overall, the incomes are really all over the place. Some entrepreneurs do very well, and others don’t make enough to get by.
So, if you are willing to take the risks and become an entrepreneur, there is certainly the potential for a huge upside. Just ask Bill Gates (started Microsoft) , Warren Buffet (started Berkshire Hathaway), and Jeff Bezos (founded Amazon.com) about the upside potential. The richest people in the world did so by going the self-employed route and built massive empires. However, even these wealthy individuals will agree that education is essential to success (whether formal or informal). Success comes to those with the knowledge, willingness to work, and ability to perform the required task (or take risks in the entrepreneurs case).
Overall, there is no guarantee in any type of career path (either self-employed or not). Engineers get fired, doctors lose their licenses, and law offices get closed. But despite these inevitable risks, the above charts and statistics should give you a realistic picture of the type of money that someone can expect by going into the respective fields.
So, what will your career journey be like? Will you get one of the highest paying jobs? Luckily, that is up to you! Make informed decisions, get educated, and go on to raise your income level.
